I see a message like "@versionnew=1073748423" but nothing else happens.

You need to have an RLV compatible viewer (like firestorm) and RLV/RLVa must be enabled.

I get a message in chat saying "No configuration found."

Make sure the configuration notecard is inside the contents of the root prim of the gasmask.
And make sure the notecard is named "dd_kdc_gas_mask_breathplay_config".

I've added the plugin but nothing happens.

The configuration notecard gets read every time the objects inventory changes, give it a couple of seconds.

I've waited for the configuration to load, but still... nothing happens.

The main reason this happens is that the KDC activator hudKDC Documentation was not attached. Please attach it and it should start to work as expected.

You can detach the hud again afterward and it will continue to work until you detach of the mask

I'm using a gag/renamer/aphasia and the plugin doesn't detect my chat messages.

That is a well known issue, and I'm working on providing a solution.
